WEAVING A TALE OF CRAFT/ Hands on Crafts

Weaving a Tale of Craft is a partnership project between the Mint Museums and the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County(PLCMC) to open the world of NC crafts to children and families in an interactive, fun, and engaging way.

The project combines the vast wealth of resources of PLCMC and the extensive craft collection of the Mint Museums to create a unique series of workshops, live artist sessions, exhibits, and special events. The project also resulted in a web site called Hands on Crafts. The website encourages children to learn about pottery, weaving, quilting, and basketry techniques and traditions by "playing around" in online studios.

The project began in 1998 when the Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded the Public Library, with the Mint Museum as partner, one of it's first National Leadership Grants.

The grant made the "Weaving a Tale of Craft" project and the Hands on Crafts web site possible. The Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency, champions the role libraries and museums play in society and supports innovative methods to serve community needs.
